Screening is an essential step in the production process. It takes place after crushing or grinding. The purpose of the operation may be either to isolate the largest pieces for reprocessing to complete insufficient fragmentation, or to remove the smallest grains that may interfere with the smooth running of the work. Screening thus allows aggregates to be classified according to their size.
Screening requires special equipment called a screen. Sorting is made possible by perforations on the surface of the screen. Only fragments smaller than the size of the holes can pass through, while larger ones are retained. Screens with multiple filter grids allow materials to be sorted into several categories according to their size. However, if the aim of the operation is to classify the elements into only two subgroups, products with a single grid are sufficient. There are several types of screening cloths: metal, rubber or synthetic fabrics. However, their resistance to material abrasion varies.
